Smarter Phosphorus Management Starts with SmartPhos® DG

Phosphorus management has become increasingly complex for turf professionals. Between nutrient regulations, runoff concerns, and inconsistent phosphorus availability in the soil, delivering efficient nutrition without compromising performance is more important than ever.

Traditional phosphorus sources typically fall into one of two categories:

  • highly soluble forms that can become tied up in the soil or move out of the root zone
  • less soluble forms that remain stable but may lack sufficient plant availability

SmartPhos DG was developed to help bridge that gap.

What Makes Struvite A Great Fertilizer?

Built with struvite, a renewable phosphorus source, SmartPhos DG combines low water solubility with high plant availability. The result is a more gradual nutrient release designed to provide season-long phosphorus feeding while reducing the potential for nutrient loss.

Research conducted at The Ohio State University demonstrated SmartPhos DG released phosphorus up to 40 times slower than traditional phosphate fertilizers. That slower release helps maintain nutrient availability over time while limiting phosphorus movement into waterways.

For turf managers, that can translate into:

  • More consistent phosphorus availability
  • Reduced tie-up across varying soil pH conditions
  • Lower leaching potential
  • Improved safety on seedlings due to low salt index
  • Efficient nutrient placement through DG Technology

Dispersing Granule (DG) Technology, further enhances performance by dispersing each granule into thousands of microparticles after irrigation, helping nutrients move quickly through the canopy and into the root zone.

SmartPhos DG is well-suited for:

  • seeding and establishment
  • grow-in programs
  • phosphorus-deficient turf
  • applications ahead of nutrient blackout periods
  • programs focused on nutrient stewardship and efficiency

Rather than delivering a rapid flush of phosphorus, SmartPhos DG is designed to support a more controlled, efficient feeding approach built around long-term turf performance.

Available as a standalone product, SmartPhos DG is also featured as the phosphorus source in select products, detailed below.

9-12-6 with HCU® and Black Gypsum DG®

9-12-6 with HCU and Black Gypsum DG is a fertilizer designed for both new turf establishment and maintenance. Representing 37% of the nitrogen source, Humic Coated Urea (HCU) provides humic acid to improve soils and strengthen roots. This formulation also contains Black Gypsum DG to aid in leaching excess sodium through the soil profile. SmartPhos DG provides plant-available phosphorus over an extended period, allowing for lower use rates compared to traditional phosphorus sources.

Contec DG® 11-8-9

Contec DG 11-8-9 is a high-performance, well-balanced fertilizer containing SmartPhos DG as the phosphorus source. Containing MUtech® slow-release nitrogen, Mg, Fe, and Mn, this product is ideal for greens, tees, and other fine turf areas. Featuring DG Technology, Contec DG 11-8-9 disperses rapidly with water, making its way to the root zone while avoiding being picked up by mowers or washed away with rainfall.

Genesis Rx® DG 5-7-5

Genesis Rx 5-7-5 is an all-in-one fertility and soil amendment product for easy application in conjunction with aerification. This product is a high-quality NPK fertility blend containing secondary and minor elements and utilizing our patented Dispersing Granule (DG) Technology.

Genesis Rx® 3-4-3 Zeolite Plus

Genesis Rx 3-4-3 Zeolite Plus, a 50/50 blend of Genesis Rx 5-7-5 and zeolite, delivers balanced NPK, secondary and minor element fertility, soil-enriching humic acid, zeolite, and a full spectrum of more than two dozen beneficial microorganisms, all in one easy-to-apply product featuring our patented Dispersing Granule (DG) Technology.

18-6-12

18-6-12 is an all-purpose fertilizer designed for professional landscapes, nursery stock, and container-grown plants, delivering consistent, season-long nutrition with an 8–9 month feeding period. Powered by 83% MUtech-XL slow release nitrogen and 15% NS-54, it also features SmartPhos slow release phosphate, plus iron and micronutrients to promote enhanced greening, improved stress tolerance, and healthy, consistent growth.

16-3-3 with CarbonCoat™ and Smartphos DG

16-3-3 with CarbonCoat and SmartPhos DG delivers extended, season-long nutrition with up to 10 weeks of controlled nitrogen release. Featuring CarbonCoat technology with poly-coated humic coated urea (PCHCU®) and SmartPhos slow release phosphate, this formulation supports improved nutrient uptake, enhanced turf performance, and more efficient phosphorus availability for consistent growth and color.
